40 years of M-Power!

To celebrate this year's 40th birthday of M-Power, a small group of M-thusiastics took a small roadtrip through the beautiful south of Holland and part of Belgium. This was also an excellent opportunity to meet some people I've been in contact with for over a year now on internet, but never met in person. Given the fact that we're approaching the end of October, the weather was extraordinarily beautiful, 22 degrees C, sunny and no clouds whatsoever. Autumn had coloured the landscape in all shades of the spectrum between red and yellow, its shine emphasized by the sun. Seldom have I seen such overwhelmingly beautiful scenery.



We met at a restaurant in Teuven (B).


Besides my e24-M635CSi, Raymond and his father joined with an extremely well-kept lachs-silber e28-M5.


Han and his brother Martijn arrived with their e34-M5 Station and Robert brought his e34-M5.


Don't let this piece of art mislead you, Robert's S38 may look brandnew, but this mechanical visualisation of pure Empowerment has seen nearly 300.000 kilometers of road. It was recently overhauled, and now with new gaskets, intake boots, adjusted clearances and timing, it runs silky smooth. Oooh I mùst overhaul mine as well.... Will make an attempt this winter.


After a nice lunch we began our little trip through the rustic Belgian villages Aubel, Val Dieux, Le Planck and back to Holland's most elevated areas around Slenaken, Epen and Valkenburg. We ended our trip in a cosy tavern, well-hidden in the forresty mountains of Vijlen, with ice cream and Weizenbier under the pleasant joy of a wide view over green pastures and truly beautiful illuminated autumn scenery.....

This article describes how to replace the crankshaft position sensor on an E39, 528i with M52 engine. If you're wondering what this article is doing in a blog about the 6-series, here's some background.... When you are busy overhauling the throttle bodies on an M635CSi (see elsewhere in this Blog), you kind of rely on the availability of another means of transportation, in my case an E39. When that one starts to display some undesired behavior, like shaking in idle, like trembling at changes in throttle position, like a structural -yet single- hickup after some 10 minutes of every trip, like difficult starting with hot engine, and like finally completely stalling while cruising on the highway, there's a good time as any to hook up the OBD-analyzer. Mine indicated a permanent error on the crankshaft position sensor, and transient erros on the camshaft sensor. I decided to swap the crankshaft sensor first. E24: Adjusting throttle valves on an M635CSi (M88)

This article describes how to check and eventually adjust the throttle valves on an M635CSi. This is by no means a straightforward procedure, requiring more than a weekend's hard work and at least some special tools, like a sliding vernier caliper (measuring accuracy of tenths of millimeters or better), a dial gauge able to measure disposition with an accuracy of hundredths of millimeters  plus mounting material, and a vacuum synchrotester (like Carbtune). For an overview of special tools and alternatives, check my other post: BMW special tools This procedure is not un-doable, but if your engine is running fine in idle, and responding nicely to the throttle, it's probably enough to just clean and lubricate the moving parts on the throttle bodies (shaft, bearings, pushing rods). E24: Overhauling the intake manifold on an M635csi

This article shows how to overhaul the intake manifold on an e24 M635csi. This may be needed in case the o-rings and rubber sleeves (parts #8 and #5 in the picture) show signs of wear, or if your accumulator needs inspection (rough idling, because of additional air being sucked in through a crack....) or if you simply want to clean the intake necks. Actually I overhauled the complete intake including throttle bodies, idle control valve and part of the cooling circuit, so the pictures will not always show an accurate situation.
