Legend's end....

Today was a beautiful day!!
I  unexpectedly was presented with the opportunity to take a day off from work!
Well, to be more precise, after I emerged from a hot bath around noon neither me or my boss considered it worthwile to travel to work. Of course, the bath was not strictly necessary since I already took a shower in the morning, but it proved quite convenient in rinsing the glass splinters from my head. I might have had these removed by the friendly nurse in the ambulance,  but in my opinion she already went to enough trouble just inspecting my back and neck.

Both body parts proved to be fine, especially when considering the fact that I used them to fiercely batter the roof and windshield of my car. Bad car! I found it a deserved punishment; there was no reason for her to take off like that, pretending to have overlooked that concrete piece of art, tumbling and rolling over, and finally coming to a grinding halt beneath the road... I showed that girl who is in charge!

Anyway, apart from this little sidestep her reputation was immaculate, and she served me perfectly for nearly three years; our divorce will be tough......



She broke my windshield, but not my heart....

If you're wondering what this article is doing in a blog about the 6-series, here's some background.... When you are busy overhauling the throttle bodies on an M635CSi (see elsewhere in this Blog), you kind of rely on the availability of another means of transportation, in my case an E39. When that one starts to display some undesired behavior, like shaking in idle, like trembling at changes in throttle position, like a structural -yet single- hickup after some 10 minutes of every trip, like difficult starting with hot engine, and like finally completely stalling while cruising on the highway, there's a good time as any to hook up the OBD-analyzer. Mine indicated a permanent error on the crankshaft position sensor, and transient erros on the camshaft sensor. I decided to swap the crankshaft sensor first. E24: Adjusting throttle valves on an M635CSi (M88)

This article describes how to check and eventually adjust the throttle valves on an M635CSi. This is by no means a straightforward procedure, requiring more than a weekend's hard work and at least some special tools, like a sliding vernier caliper (measuring accuracy of tenths of millimeters or better), a dial gauge able to measure disposition with an accuracy of hundredths of millimeters  plus mounting material, and a vacuum synchrotester (like Carbtune). For an overview of special tools and alternatives, check my other post: BMW special tools This procedure is not un-doable, but if your engine is running fine in idle, and responding nicely to the throttle, it's probably enough to just clean and lubricate the moving parts on the throttle bodies (shaft, bearings, pushing rods). E24: Overhauling the intake manifold on an M635csi

This article shows how to overhaul the intake manifold on an e24 M635csi. This may be needed in case the o-rings and rubber sleeves (parts #8 and #5 in the picture) show signs of wear, or if your accumulator needs inspection (rough idling, because of additional air being sucked in through a crack....) or if you simply want to clean the intake necks. Actually I overhauled the complete intake including throttle bodies, idle control valve and part of the cooling circuit, so the pictures will not always show an accurate situation.
