Replacing the crankshaft & camshaft sensors on an E39 528i (M52)
This article describes how to replace the crankshaft position sensor on an E39, 528i with M52 engine. If you're wondering what this article is doing in a blog about the 6-series, here's some background.... When you are busy overhauling the throttle bodies on an M635CSi (see elsewhere in this Blog), you kind of rely on the availability of another means of transportation, in my case an E39. When that one starts to display some undesired behavior, like shaking in idle, like trembling at changes in throttle position, like a structural -yet single- hickup after some 10 minutes of every trip, like difficult starting with hot engine, and like finally completely stalling while cruising on the highway, there's a good time as any to hook up the OBD-analyzer. Mine indicated a permanent error on the crankshaft position sensor, and transient erros on the camshaft sensor. I decided to swap the crankshaft sensor first.
